Updates to the Northwest Territories Petroleum Legislation: What We Heard Report Released

News Releases

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) has released a “What We Heard” report which summarizes the feedback it received during public and stakeholder engagements on proposed changes to the Petroleum Resources Act (PRA) and the Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA).

From March 5 through May 4, 2018, the Department led an extensive engagement campaign on the development of amendments to the two Acts as identified in commitment 1.3.2 of the Government of the Northwest Territories Mandate.

During the engagement sessions conversations were led by the HAVE YOUR SAY! Updates to the NWT’s Petroleum Legislation Engagement Paper. This paper outlines proposed amendments and actions including proposals to evolve administration and transparency and how to handle significant petroleum discoveries in the NWT.

Seven communities across all regions of the NWT were visited and residents were invited to provide input at public drop-in sessions. Officials from ITI also met with numerous Indigenous Governments and Organizations and offered teleconferences to stakeholders that were unable to meet during community visits.

Final policy development is currently underway.
