More Explorers than Ever Vie for Mining Incentive Program Funds

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 7, 2018) — The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is investing another $1 million in the future of mineral exploration in the NWT. Eighteen projects will benefit this year from funding provided under the Mining Incentive Program (MIP).

The program, now in its fourth year, invests in qualifying prospecting and exploration projects across the NWT to advance mineral exploration. It is administered by the NWT Geological Survey, a division of the GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

Commemorating Mining Week in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (June 5, 2018) - In recognition of Mining week in the NWT, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann is issuing the following statement on the NWT Mining Sector: 

“I’m pleased to see many indications that the future is bright for this ever-important sector.

“Grassroots exploration is rising and there is a renewed interest in securing mineral claims and prospecting permits. In 2017, the number of staked claims nearly tripled 2016 levels. The trend is continuing in 2018 and includes companies new to our North.

REDI information Trade Show in Yellowknife for Mining Week

YELLOWKNIFE (June 4, 2018) - Yellowknife residents will have an opportunity this week to discuss and ask questions about natural resources and energy in the Northwest Territories; and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT’s) approach to energy and resource development.

An “Information Tradeshow” is being staged this week as part of the GNWT’s Resources and Energy Development Information (REDI) initiative.

Last night Premier McLeod on behalf of our government accepted the Diamonds Do Good Award from the Diamond Empowerment Fund and its Global Board of Directors in recognition of our leadership in Indigenous participation, and socio-economic management in our mining industry.

NWT Takes Home Award for Sustainable Diamond Industry

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (June 1, 2018)The Northwest Territories was recognized last night as a world-leading jurisdiction for responsible mining.

In his acceptance of a Diamonds Do Good Award from the World Diamond Empowerment Fund, Premier Bob McLeod credited the partnership that has evolved between industry and public and Indigenous governments to advance the socially and environmentally-conscious management of mining in the NWT.

Wally Schumann: GNWT Tourism Investments and Tourism Week

Mr. Speaker, May 27 to June 2 is Tourism Week across Canada.

Tourism Week provides an opportunity to highlight the tourism sector and the economic opportunities that accompany it. Tourism is a key part of the Government of the Northwest Territories commitment to advance regional economic growth and diversification.   

This week, events and activities across our territory will bring people together to celebrate the places and experiences that encouraged 100 thousand visitors to join us North of 60 last year.

Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories has significant and varied energy resources. As Canada's gas and Liquefied Natural Gas industry takes steps towards competing in the global market, NWT resources are positioned to both improve energy security locally and help Canada compete.

The responsible development of these resources will also create meaningful jobs for residents, opportunities for businesses, and sources of revenue to support territory-wide public programs and services for NWT residents.

Made-In-NWT Training Program to Meet NWT Industry Needs

YELLOWKNIFE (MAY 24, 2018) — The first-ever Geoscience Field Assistant Training Program began last week in Yellowknife.

Eight participants, supported by eight employer sponsors have signed on to take the five-week, classroom-based course, to be followed by 160 hours of on-the-job training.  The Mine Training Society will offer wage subsidies of $21/hour to employers for the on-the-ground portion.
