YELLOWKNIFE (July 11, 2018) – Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann and Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Caroline Cochrane offer the following statement commemorating the 30^th anniversary of the Great Northern Arts Festival.

“The arts help build our economy, enhance our education, strengthen our communities’ and most of all, bring us together. They also contribute to the way we tell our stories, share our cultures, celebrate our traditions and bridge our past with our future.

BEIJING (June 28, 2018) — Canada’s spectacular Northwest Territories will soon be receiving increased promotion and exposure in the world’s largest marketplace.

Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann was among those on hand Sunday to witness the signing of a marketing agreement between NWT Tourism — the NWT’s official destination marketing organization, and Flow Creative - a China-based creative agency.  Federal Minister of Small Business and Tourism, Bardish Chagger, was also in attendance.

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 8, 2018) — The Government of the Northwest Territories, in partnership with the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, is seeking nominations for this year’s 2^nd annual NWT Mining and Exploration (MAX) Awards.

The annual MAX awards celebrate and encourage excellence within the NWT’s largest industry - and all facets of northern life with which it interacts.

Nominations are being sought in five categories:

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 7, 2018) — With licences, tags, and tools in-hand, aspiring prospectors will soon be striking out on-the-land and learning to stake claims.

A two day Introduction to Prospecting course is being offered to residents of Yellowknife, Dettah and Ndilǫ from June 23-24, 2018.

The NWT Geological Survey and Mining Recorders Office - divisions of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment - are partnering with the Mine Training Society, TerraX Minerals, and the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines to deliver the programming. 

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 7, 2018) — The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is investing another $1 million in the future of mineral exploration in the NWT. Eighteen projects will benefit this year from funding provided under the Mining Incentive Program (MIP).

The program, now in its fourth year, invests in qualifying prospecting and exploration projects across the NWT to advance mineral exploration. It is administered by the NWT Geological Survey, a division of the GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 5, 2018) - In recognition of Mining week in the NWT, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann is issuing the following statement on the NWT Mining Sector: 

“I’m pleased to see many indications that the future is bright for this ever-important sector.

“Grassroots exploration is rising and there is a renewed interest in securing mineral claims and prospecting permits. In 2017, the number of staked claims nearly tripled 2016 levels. The trend is continuing in 2018 and includes companies new to our North.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 4, 2018) - Yellowknife residents will have an opportunity this week to discuss and ask questions about natural resources and energy in the Northwest Territories; and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT’s) approach to energy and resource development.

An “Information Tradeshow” is being staged this week as part of the GNWT’s Resources and Energy Development Information (REDI) initiative.

Mr. Speaker, with our people-centred approach to managing natural resources, the Northwest Territories does mining differently.

Last night Premier McLeod on behalf of our government accepted the Diamonds Do Good Award from the Diamond Empowerment Fund and its Global Board of Directors in recognition of our leadership in Indigenous participation, and socio-economic management in our mining industry.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (June 1, 2018) — The Northwest Territories was recognized last night as a world-leading jurisdiction for responsible mining.

In his acceptance of a Diamonds Do Good Award from the World Diamond Empowerment Fund, Premier Bob McLeod credited the partnership that has evolved between industry and public and Indigenous governments to advance the socially and environmentally-conscious management of mining in the NWT.

Mr. Speaker, May 27 to June 2 is Tourism Week across Canada.

Tourism Week provides an opportunity to highlight the tourism sector and the economic opportunities that accompany it. Tourism is a key part of the Government of the Northwest Territories commitment to advance regional economic growth and diversification.   

This week, events and activities across our territory will bring people together to celebrate the places and experiences that encouraged 100 thousand visitors to join us North of 60 last year.
