Public Safety Update: Reid Lake Fire, Highways 3 and 4

YELLOWKNIFE (August 10, 2015) – Fire ZF-014, near Reid Lake, is still a threat. The GNWT is working to suppress the fire and ensure the safety of the public. The following are updates from the various government agencies involved in the response to this wildfire.

The next Public Safety Update will be issued on Thursday, August 13, 2015, unless the situation at the Reid Lake fire advances significantly before then.

Tom Beaulieu: Highways Capacity Improvement Project- Funding Announcement Technical Briefing

Good afternoon.

This technical briefing supplements today’s announcement of a funding partnership between the Governments of the Northwest Territories and Canada to deliver the NWT Highway Capacity Upgrade Project, valued at $96 million.

This afternoon, we heard the Government of Canada is contributing $72 million, that’s 75% of the cost to reconstruct identified sections of the NWT highway.

Territory-wide transportation strategy tabled

YELLOWKNIFE (June 3, 2015) – Minister of Transportation Tom Beaulieu today released Connecting Us: Northwest Territories Transportation Strategy 2015-2040, which will guide development of the transportation system for the next 25 years. The strategy sets the path forward to improve the territory’s integrated air, road, rail and marine system led by a vision of “Northerners connected to opportunities”.   

Tom Beaulieu: NWT Transportation Strategy

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to announce that later today I will table an updated territory-wide, multi-modal Transportation Strategy entitled “Connecting Us: Northwest Territories Transportation Strategy 2015-2040”. This important document will guide further development of our integrated air, road, rail, and marine systems over the next 25 years. With this Strategy, the Department of Transportation will work towards a vision of “Northerners connected to opportunities”, based on three key strategic objectives.
