Louis Sebert: Progress on Access to Justice: Legal Aid Commission Expands Outreach Services

Mr. Speaker, as a government we have committed in our mandate to improve access to justice by making family law duty counsel services available to assist people representing themselves in court.  Today, I would like to provide an update on how this government is meeting and exceeding that commitment with an initiative to assist residents involved in civil or family justice matters.

Bob McLeod: Progress in Negotiating Land, Resources and Self-government Agreements

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories made a commitment in its mandate to work to resolve outstanding land, resources and self-government agreements during the term of our government. I would like to update Members today on the work our government is doing to fulfill that commitment.

Work underway to support cannabis legalization in Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE (April 20, 2017) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has begun the necessary work to prepare for the legalization of cannabis following the tabling of federal legislation in the House of Commons last week.

The GNWT established a multi-departmental cannabis working group in 2016 in response to federal plans to table legislation sometime in early 2017. The working group will now review the legislation to determine next steps to ensure the GNWT is prepared for legalization in July 2018.

Leaders Break Ground for New Women's Correctional Facility

Yellowknife (March 23, 2017) – Minister of Justice Louis Sebert,  Fort Smith area leaders and members of the public came together today for an official groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Correctional Complex Women’s Unit in Fort Smith.

This new modern correctional facility will emphasize open cultural and educational areas to help support inmate rehabilitation and healing. The structure will take into consideration both the current and future needs of adult female inmates in the NWT.

Today I would like to provide an update on this work, starting off with information on the comprehensive review of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Ministerial Restorative Justice Award 2016 Presented to Hay River Principal

HAY RIVER (December 9, 2016) - The Minister of Justice announced today,  Lynne Beck, Principal of Diamond Jenness High School in Hay River has won  the 2016 Restorative Justice Award for her significant contributions to establishing restorative justice practices in her school as an alternative form of discipline.

The award is presented each year through a nomination process. Lynne Beck was nominated by her peers to acknowledge the positive difference and change for the better within the school through policies she has instituted.
