Northern Corrections Service professionals receive national recognition

The Governor General of Canada’s Corrections Exemplary Service Medal, Canada’s highest honour for the Corrections Services, has been awarded to six northern professionals.

 

The Corrections Exemplary Service Medals recognize distinguished service and are intended as a tangible expression of national gratitude. 

 

The medals were presented by the Honourable Margaret Thom, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, during an evening reception on May 7, 2019.

 

Louis Sebert: Combatting Cyber-Bullying in the NWT

Mr. Speaker, today is national Pink Shirt Day. I applaud all Members for wearing pink in the House today to symbolize that we will not tolerate bullying of any kind.

 

The internet has opened an invaluable connection to the world by allowing residents of all ages in even our smallest communities’ access to information and opportunities easily.  Sadly, it has also allowed bullying to move online.

 

New Judge Appointed to Territorial Court

Minister of Justice Louis Sebert announced today the appointment of Donovan Frederick Molloy, Q.C., as the new judge of the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories. This appointment will be effective February 20, 2019.

Mr. Molloy graduated with distinction from the Law program at University of New Brunswick in 1992, and was called to the Bar in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1993.

The dedicated employees of the Department of Justice, in particular our frontline corrections professionals, know first-hand how important it is that our programs and services focus on the root causes that lead to an individual coming into contact with the justice system.  

The Government of the Northwest Territories tables draft cannabis legislation

YELLOWKNIFE (February 28, 2018) –   Louis Sebert, Minister of Justice, introduced the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) proposed legislation for legalizing recreational cannabis in the Northwest Territories (NWT) today.

The proposed Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act deals with those aspects of the legalization of recreational cannabis that the GNWT has authority over, including: minimum age, possession limits, public smoking, the sale and distribution of recreational cannabis, and impaired driving.

Northern Corrections and Probation Officers receive national recognition

YELLOWKNIFE (February 9, 2018) – Twenty-three northerners were awarded the Governor General of Canada’s Corrections Exemplary Service Medal yesterday, the highest honour for corrections services professionals in Canada.

Northwest Territories corrections service professionals from Yellowknife, Hay River, and Fort Smith received the Governor General medal for distinguished service at a reception yesterday evening.

The Honourable Margaret Thom, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories presented the medals.

The Government of the Northwest Territories proposes a way forward for the legalisation of cannabis in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (NOVEMBER 24, 2017) – Minister of Justice Louis Sebert released the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) proposed plan for legalizing cannabis in the NWT today. This is an important step in designing a system that will provide controlled access to a safe supply of recreational cannabis for NWT residents in order to maintain the health and safety of residents and communities across the North.
