Dô Edàezhe Program Expansion for Yellowknife Catholic Schools

YELLOWKNIFE (March 10, 2014) – Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS) will see an expansion of their Dô Edàezhe Program through the Education Renewal and Innovation initiative (ERI). Dô Edàezhe was developed to address concerns for YCS students that were disengaged from their schools, at risk of or already dropping out, and facing other challenges in their lives.

Minister of Health and Social Services Accepts Auditor General Recommendations

YELLOWKNIFE (March 4, 2014) – Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy has accepted all recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) Report on Child and Family Services. “The wellbeing of children and families is a priority for the Government of the Northwest Territories,” said Minister Abernethy.

First Species Added to the NWT List of Species at Risk

YELLOWNIFE (March 4, 2014) – Environment and Natural Resources Minister J. Michael Miltenberger has listed the polar bear as a species of special concern and the boreal caribou, Peary caribou and the hairy braya as threatened species in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

The four are the first species to be placed on the NWT List of Species at Risk, established under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act.

New NWT Birth Certificates Enhance Security, Durability

YELLOWKNIFE (March 4, 2014) – The Government of the Northwest Territories will introduce new, more secure birth certificates on April 1, 2014.

“The new birth certificate will be highly secure and durable, similar to those issued in most provinces,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy. “Creating a more secure document is an important way for the Government of the Northwest Territories to help Northwest Territories residents protect their identity.”

Agreement to Provide Business, Employment and Training Opportunities for Residents of Fort Resolution

FORT RESOLUTION, NWT (February 28, 2014) – A forest management agreement (FMA), signed today by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources J. Michael Miltenberger and Timberworks Inc. Secretary/Treasurer Raymond King and Board Member Leonard Beaulieu, will provide business, employment and training opportunities in the forest industry for residents of Fort Resolution.

Resource Revenue Sharing and Intergovernmental Council agreements Signed

YELLOWKNIFE (February 27, 2014) – Premier Bob McLeod announced today the signing of the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Resource Revenue Sharing Agreement (RRS) and the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Agreement on Land and Resource Management by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Northwest Territory Métis Nation, Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated, Gwich’in Tribal Council, and Tłįchǫ Government.
