Wildland Urban Interface Program Launches, Strengthening Community Safety

Today, a new tool in the Northwest Territories wildfire and community emergency response toolkit was unveiled. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), in partnership with the Northwest Territories Fire Chiefs Association, is implementing a new territorial-wide Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) program.

The program advances the GNWT’s mandate of safer communities and directly addresses a key gap identified in the 2023 wildfire operations review: the need for stronger integration between wildland and structural firefighting during community wildfire threats.

GNWT introduces a standardized territorial process for Supported Living admissions

The Government of the Northwest Territories is introducing a new admission process for adults with disabilities into GNWT-funded Supported Living services.

Starting May 13, 2026, all new Supported Living admissions are coordinated through the Committee for Applications to Supported Living, known as CASL. CASL will serve as a single entry point for Supported Living applications across the Northwest Territories. Previously, admissions and waitlists were managed through various processes across regions and service providers.

Fort Simpson Modular Housing Project Milestone Marks Shift from Planning to Production

Construction is well underway on two new Housing NWT modular duplexes for Fort Simpson, which are expected to be delivered to the community later this summer.

Fort Simpson is the first of nine communities scheduled to receive new modular duplexes and/or fourplexes through a project that will replace social housing units that have reached the end of their design life.

Ground Breaks on New Territorial Wildfire Centre, Supporting Safer Communities Across the NWT

A key milestone was reached on a critical public safety investment as the Government of the Northwest Territories broke ground on a new Territorial Wildfire Centre building today.

The Territorial Wildfire Centre will be the central artery of the wildfire management program in the NWT – providing the technical needs, warehousing capacity, and facilities required for a modern wildfire management program.

GNWT investing over $30 million to strengthen supports for students following Inclusive Schooling Review

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is taking action to strengthen supports for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) students following a comprehensive review of inclusive schooling.

Inclusive schooling means ensuring each student can learn and succeed, with supports that reflect their individual needs. Between 2024 and 2026, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) reviewed how inclusive schooling is working across the NWT.

Five New Modular Housing Units Taking Shape in Behchokǫ̀

Five new modular housing units are now in Behchokǫ̀ for on-site assembly, marking the final phase of construction before the homes are ready for occupancy. These new units will replace existing Housing NWT units that have reached the end of their service life and will provide safe, accessible and energy-efficient social housing in the community.

This project includes a new three-bedroom modular home and a modular fourplex with singles units. The homes are the result of a partnership between Housing NWT, Tłı̨chǫ Community Builders Ltd. and METCAN Building Solutions Inc.

GNWT and City of Yellowknife Advance Feasibility Study for Potential 2035 Canada Winter Games

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the City of Yellowknife are working together to advance feasibility work to assess whether the Northwest Territories should pursue a bid to host the 2035 Canada Winter Games. The feasibility work is being undertaken from a territory‑wide perspective and is exploring a range of hosting approaches that could involve multiple Northwest Territories communities in different ways.
