GNWT Releases the Annual Report of the Director of Child and Family Services

Today the Minister of Health and Social Services tabled the 2024-2025 Annual Report of the Director of Child and Family Services (CFS) in the Legislative Assembly.

The Annual Report provides a detailed summary of services delivered in the Northwest Territories (NWT) between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Services include adoption, family preservation, prevention supports, and protection. The report also shows trends that can help to identify opportunities for improvement and where positive and meaningful change has taken place.

Housing NWT Responds to Auditor General’s Report with Action and Commitment to Northerners

The Office of the Auditor General of Canada has released its performance audit of Housing NWT. The audit identifies areas for improvement in equitable access to housing and housing supports through its Public Housing and Homeownership Programs.
Housing NWT accepts all recommendations and is taking immediate steps to strengthen oversight, improve maintenance systems, and modernize policies to ensure fairness and transparency.

Marine Transportation Services completes successful 2025 community resupply season

Marine Transportation Services (MTS) has completed its 2025 resupply season with deliveries of essential cargo and fuel to 10 northern communities.

This annual scheduled service provides cost-effective resupply to residents and businesses in communities along the Mackenzie River, Great Slave Lake, and up into the Western Arctic and Kitikmeot Regions. 

Territory-wide lead testing protocol launched for NWT JK-12 schools

A territory-wide lead testing protocol launches this week for school drinking water. The protocol outlines a clear, consistent, and science-based approach to sampling and testing water in all Northwest Territories (NWT) JK-12 schools.

The protocol is grounded in Health Canada’s guidance and was adapted to meet the unique needs of the NWT, which include logistical challenges such as remote locations, trucked water systems, and older infrastructure in some schools.

Construction begins on the Dehk’è Frank Channel Bridge Replacement Project

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), in partnership with the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the Government of Canada is celebrating the start of construction on the Dehk’è Frank Channel Bridge Replacement Project.

With $52.5 million from the National Trade Corridors Fund under the Government of Canada, the GNWT has awarded a construction contract for $120.7 million to the Tłı̨chǫ–Kiewit General Partnership (TKGP).  

GNWT Honours NWT Public Servants with 2025 Premier’s Awards for Excellence

Earlier today, the 2024–2025 Premier’s Awards for Excellence were presented in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly.

The Government of the Northwest Territories’ annual Premier’s Awards for Excellence recognize the outstanding achievements of employees and partners who demonstrate excellence and innovation in serving the people of the Northwest Territories.

This year’s awards highlight the contributions of individuals and teams whose dedication, leadership, and creativity have strengthened programs, services, and communities across the territory.

GNWT taking actions to address initial findings from Dehcho education investigation

Initial findings and recommendations from the investigation into concerns around education in the Dehcho region have been released to the Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) by the independent investigator. The GNWT is taking immediate actions to support education bodies with next steps.

On July 10, the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) appointed an independent investigator under section 113 of the Education Act to investigate a range of concerns in the region and provide findings and recommendations for solutions.

2025 NWT Environmental Audit Confirms Ongoing Improvements to Environmental Regulatory System

The 2025 Northwest Territories Environmental Audit has noted the improvements in the GNWT’s work. The Audit is a legislated independent review that takes place every five years.

The Audit examines how effectively the NWT’s environmental regulatory system is working, assesses how environmental information is used in decision-making, and evaluates progress on cumulative impact monitoring. It also examines the adequacy of responses to past audit recommendations.
