GNWT Announces Appointment of New Public Board of Directors for NTPC and NT Hydro

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new public Board of Directors for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and NT Hydro. As a Crown corporation, NTPC operates at arm’s length from the GNWT and will be guided by a ministerial letter outlining expectations and responsibilities. This transition marks an important step in strengthening governance and ensuring that oversight of the territory’s electricity system reflects the public interest.

NWT advocacy leads to increase in Immigration Nominee Program spaces

Minister Caitlin Cleveland is pleased to announce that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the Northwest Territories’ 2025 allocation for the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) by 47 nominees, bringing the total to 197.

While this increase does not fully restore the territory’s allocation to 2024 levels— which had been cut in half by the previous federal government— the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) welcomes these additional spaces and will continue to advocate for an increased allocation that corresponds to NWT needs.

GNWT Launches Interim Support Assistants Initiative to Maintain Classroom Supports

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is allocating up to $14 million to implement the Support Assistants Initiative for the 2025–26 school year, ensuring students continue to receive the in-class support they need despite recent changes to federal funding.

The temporary initiative is a direct response to recent changes in federal funding under Jordan’s Principle – a program that has long provided vital supports to Indigenous students in schools throughout the Northwest Territories (NWT).

GNWT outlines next steps to ensure continued access to adult education and employment programs across the NWT

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released a critical path outlining how it will continue to support access to quality education and employment programs following the closure of Aurora College’s Community Learning Centres (CLCs) earlier this year.

The critical path highlights immediate and medium-term actions to ensure residents across the territory can continue to access adult learning and training opportunities.

GNWT permanently increases rates and expands eligibility for Senior Home Heating Subsidy

In response to the rising cost of living, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is permanently increasing subsidy rates and expanding eligibility criteria for its Senior Home Heating Subsidy program.

These changes follow input from the Standing Committee on Social Development, which has consistently highlighted the importance of reviewing subsidy rates and income thresholds to better support seniors with home heating costs.

Starting this year, the Senior Home Heating Subsidy rates will increase in all communities.

Back to School = Slow Down!

With the new school year just around the corner, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the City of Yellowknife are joining forces for the first time to promote a shared Back to School Safety Campaign reminding drivers, parents, and students to stay alert and stay safe.

This coordinated effort builds on year-round safe driving campaigns with a special focus on school zones, road safety, and child protection at the start of the school year. Messaging will focus on key safety areas including:

Adam Yeadon Memorial Scholarship offers two $5000 scholarships for forestry/wildfire management students

The 2025 intake for the Adam Yeadon Memorial Scholarship is open for applications. 

The Adam Yeadon Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Northwest Territories full-time post-secondary students enrolled in diploma, degree or other approved training programs related to forestry or wildfire management to support northern students interested in pursuing an education in these fields.  

The scholarship was established in 2024 after Adam’s passing in the line of duty during the 2023 wildfire season. 

Our Healthbox Initiative to Bring Free, Private Access to Health Supplies in Behchokǫ̀, Hay River, Inuvik, and Yellowknife

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), in partnership with REACH Nexus at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital (Unity Health Toronto), has launched a three-year project to provide free and anonymous access to health and harm reduction supplies through Our Healthbox machines.
