The GNWT Endorses New Canadian Sport Policy to Advance Inclusive, Culturally Relevant Sport

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has endorsed the Canadian Sport Policy 2025–2035, a renewed national framework that emphasizes inclusion, reconciliation, and community well-being through sport. This endorsement reflects the GNWT’s commitment to building a sport system that is safe, accessible, and culturally relevant for all residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT).

GNWT Nearing Completion of Hazardous Waste Stockpile Removal from Communities

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is completing the final year of its program to remove hazardous waste stockpiles from solid waste sites in communities across the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Since the program started in 2022, nearly one million kilograms of hazardous waste have been removed from 20 communities in the NWT. Nahanni Butte, Jean Marie River, Aklavik, Inuvik, Délı̨nę, Łutsel K’e and Fort Resolution will be the final communities to have hazardous waste removed from their solid waste sites as part of this program.

The GNWT appoints Administrator to Fort Resolution Housing Authority

The Fort Resolution Housing Authority has been placed under Administration. This will remain in effect until it is repealed at a date to be determined.

The Minister of Housing Northwest Territories (Housing NWT) has determined that it has become necessary to place the Fort Resolution Housing Authority under administration to due to operational challenges. It is an exceptional measure that has been deemed necessary to stabilize operations and address the challenges the Housing Authority is facing.

GNWT Announces Training Opportunities for NGOs in the NWT

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is improving access to training opportunities for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as part of its commitment to strengthening the non-profit and charitable sector in the territory.

By creating access to available GNWT trainings, the GNWT aims to support capacity building and organizational development for NGOs that are providing critical services to residents across the territory. Available topics include:

Summer Highway Construction Projects Across the NWT

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) would like to advise residents of several highway and bridge construction projects in the coming summer months.

The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories invest millions each year in NWT highways, bridges and culverts to ensure they remain a safe and reliable transportation option for residents, businesses and visitors.

NWT CIMP invests $2.2 million in monitoring and research of caribou, water, and fish

The Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP) is providing $2.2 million in 2025-26 to support 29 new and ongoing monitoring and research projects.

Of the 29 projects funded, seven are focused on traditional knowledge, 21 are science focused, and one combines traditional knowledge and science. All these projects address key cumulative impact monitoring priorities for caribou, water and/or fish. Project results will provide valuable knowledge for natural resource managers, governments, and communities to inform decision-making.
