The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) would like to inform telephone service subscribers that, effective January 1, 2025, the 9-1-1 cost recovery fee will increase by $1.30 monthly, bringing the total monthly fee to $3.00.
The fee is currently set at $1.70. This adjustment will apply to all ratepayers with NWT phone numbers and will mark the first fee change since the service launched on November 19, 2019.
The NWT 9-1-1 cost recovery fee is intended to recoup the full cost of providing the service so that it remains cost-neutral for the GNWT. This increase reflects the actual costs of maintaining and operating 9-1-1, ensuring reliable emergency response across the territory.
The successful operation of the NWT’s 9-1-1 service is a shared responsibility between the GNWT and community governments. The GNWT is committed to providing the best possible service using locally-available resources. 9-1-1 is essential for public safety, offering quick access to emergency responders like police, fire services, and paramedics.
Call 9-1-1 in an emergency situation, including:
- If a crime is happening, and you need the RCMP or police;
- If you see a dangerous fire; or
- If you or someone else needs urgent medical help.
The NWT 9-1-1 service is available in all 11 official languages of the Northwest Territories. While 9-1-1 operators speak English and French, they can connect with interpreters for NWT Indigenous languages, as well as over 180 additional languages.
