Monsieur le President, today I rise to celebrate the vibrant Francophone community of the Northwest Territories during the 27th Annual Rendez-vous de la Francophonie. This month-long celebration throughout March highlights the rich linguistic and cultural contributions of Francophones across Canada, including right here in the North.

This year’s theme, “Cultivate Your Roots”, is a call to action. It reminds us that Francophone culture is not just something to observe; it is something to nurture, grow, and share. From the classrooms of École Allain St-Cyr to the culture events put on by the Fédération franco-ténoise, our Franco-ténois community is thriving.

On March 22, we invite residents to join us at the Legislative Assembly for a day of celebration. In partnership with the Franco-ténois community, we are hosting interactive workshops on the historical roots of the French presence in the NWT, the relationship with Indigenous Peoples, discussions by French learners and Indigenous alumni of College Nordique Francophone, demonstrations and a shared meal. These free events are a true reflection of the warmth and inclusivity of Francophone culture.

Monsieur le President, beyond this month, the Northwest Territories continues to play a key role in the broader Canadian Francophonie. This year, the Northwest Territories is co-chairing the Ministers’ Council on the Canadian Francophonie;  a forum that brings together territorial, provincial and federal governments together to strengthen French language and culture across the country.

In June, the Northwest Territories will welcome Francophonie Ministers from across the country to Yellowknife for two days meetings to collaborate on joint areas of interest. While they are here, I will ensure they learn about the energy, resilience, and diversity of our franco-ténois community, as well as the broader linguistic tapestry of all 11 official languages in the territory.

Monsieur le President, this is a time to celebrate, connect, and embrace the French language and culture in our territory. Whether you speak French fluently or are wanting to learn, I encourage everyone to take part in the many events happening throughout March. Let us come together to celebrate the language, traditions, and contributions of our Franco-ténois community.

Merci, Monsieur le President.
