Hey NWT drivers – especially our new and younger drivers – Canadian Youth Road Safety Week is coming up from October 20 to 26. It’s all about starting the conversation on safe driving and cutting out risky behaviours that put you and others at risk.
The reality? Road crashes are one of the leading causes of death for youth ages 15 to 24. That’s why this week matters.
Here are four key things to keep in mind every time you get behind the wheel:
- Distracted Driving: Your texts, snaps, and playlists can wait. Eyes on the road.
- Impaired Driving: If you’ve been drinking or using drugs, don’t drive. Find another way home.
- Speeding: Slow it down. Drive for the conditions and respect the limits.
- Seatbelts: Buckle up – no excuses, no matter how short the trip.
Parents, guardians, and communities also play a big role. Talk to your teens about driving safely, share your own tips, and lead by example.
Safe driving isn’t just about following rules – it’s about protecting yourself, your friends, and everyone else on the road. Let’s look out for each other.
