Minister Caitlin Cleveland issued the following statement today to mark National Francophonie Day:
“Today, we celebrate the Francophonie and the important role Franco-ténois communities play in the Northwest Territories. For generations, they have helped shape our schools, workplaces, arts, culture, and public service. Their contributions help make the NWT a place where people can connect, pursue opportunities, and thrive.
“National Francophonie Day takes place during Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, a month that showcases Francophone culture and creativity across Canada.
“This year’s theme, ‘Activate your Francophonie,’ invites everyone to get involved, connect with other Francophones and Francophiles, and experience French language and Francophone culture. From the classrooms of École Allain St-Cyr, École Boréale, and Collège Nordique Francophone, to the events hosted by the Fédération franco-ténoise, this month has been full of activities showing that our Franco-ténois community is vibrant, thriving, and welcoming to all.
“This day is also a chance to highlight the work our government is doing with Francophone partners to strengthen French language communications, programs, and services.
“In late February I stopped by the Forum on Francophone Immigration in the Prairies and the Northwest Territories, where I spoke about coordination between government and Franco-ténois organizations and community leaders to connect French-speaking newcomers to employment opportunities, community supports, and government services. In a small jurisdiction like ours, these relationships make a real difference.
Earlier this month at PDAC, I spoke at the Minister’s Council on Canadian Francophonie Breakfast about the Northwest Territories’ Francophonie’s contributions in the mineral resource sector. Being able to live and work in French is an asset for our territory and an advantage when attracting investment and partnerships.
“Last summer, the Government of the Northwest Territories signed an agreement with Quebec to strengthen collaboration on Francophonie initiatives. The agreement supports participation in Québec’s Canadian Francophonie funding programs and builds stronger connections between our communities.
“Our public service translators play a crucial role in the territory. In the last five years, they have translated over 14 million words, from speeches and news releases to handbooks and application forms. Their work often goes unnoticed. but it makes information more accessible and helps Francophone residents feel included and informed. Thank you for the vital role you play.
“On this National Francophonie Day, we celebrate the diversity and vitality of the Francophonie in the Northwest Territories. Whether you speak French fluently, are learning, or simply enjoy Francophone culture, there are many ways to participate in this month’s activities. Check out the events put on by the Fédération franco-ténoise here.”
