Housing NWT, in partnership with the Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation, is delivering 10 new housing units in the Tłı̨chǫ Region to support seniors and individuals in Behchokǫ̀, Gamètì, and Whatì.
These duplexes, funded by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), are designed to provide safe, accessible, and energy-efficient housing, allowing seniors to age in place with dignity and ensuring that single residents have secure, affordable housing.
Housing remains a top priority for the 20th Assembly, and this project is part of the Government of the Northwest Territories' (GNWT) commitment to delivering More Homes for Northerners. This initiative also highlights the value of collaboration with Indigenous governments to maximize funding, create training opportunities, and strengthen community capacity.
The duplexes are built to high energy-efficiency standards, featuring triple-glazed windows, airtight construction, and highly efficient heating systems to reduce utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the senior units include barrier-free kitchens and bathroom fixtures to enhance accessibility.
With the majority of units expected to be occupied by Spring 2025, this project demonstrates how strong partnerships between Housing NWT, Indigenous businesses, and governments can deliver real housing solutions for communities across the NWT.
