The following media statement was issued by Diane Archie, Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure, and Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, on their participation in the Arctic Development Expo.
“This week researchers, Indigenous leaders, circumpolar governments, scientists, and industry experts gathered in Inuvik for the Arctic Development Expo. This annual event takes place in Inuvik to encourage collaboration that enhances circumpolar life and creates innovative solutions for challenges that face northern communities.
“During the event, immersive and dynamic sessions focused on four key themes: natural & renewable resources, climate and energy innovations, Indigenous leadership, circumpolar governance, and the knowledge economy.
“Now that the Public Health Emergency is over and we are learning to live with COVID-19, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is focused on ways to fuel the post-pandemic recovery. The themes discussed at this year’s Arctic Development Expo will help shape our conversations and decisions around Northwest Territories’ (NWT) infrastructure development, sustainability, and business and employment opportunities.
“As we emerge from the pandemic, we have a lot of work to do, and we will continue to invest in people, places, prosperity, and partnerships. We are committed to the overall economic prosperity of the territory and will continue to work closely with our partners to bring positive change that will have a long-lasting impact on the health and well being of all NWT residents.
”Responsible and innovative resource development that supports our economic prosperity and helps create jobs and business opportunities, is critical to our territory’s success. An innovative approach to growing and diversifying the economy while reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions will create a better future for the territory.
“The discussions participants had, information gathered and relationships built over the course of the Expo will help the Northwest Territories move forward as we work towards a prosperous, sustainable future.”
“The Arctic Development Expo is about many things, but it is really about people coming together to find ways to get things done and make life better in the North.”
