The Government of the Northwest Territories has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about Elder abuse and neglect.
You have a Right to be Safe in Your Home and in Your Community is the first stage of a broader campaign to create awareness and understanding of Elder abuse, contributing factors, and how to prevent and stop it.
A poster and fact sheet have been developed to share information on the different types of abuse Elders can experience, including financial, psychological, physical and sexual abuse, and neglect.
This campaign is in alignment with the Department of Health and Social Services What Will it Take? and It’s Not Right campaigns, being used by the NWT Seniors’ Society in their “Creating Safe Communities for Older Adults Workshop”.
Acknowledging and discussing the presence of Elder abuse and neglect in NWT communities is difficult but critical to ensuring the safety and protection of Elders, who have the right to be safe and to feel safe.
Helping to protect seniors from abuse and neglect is a GNWT priority and reflects the government’s commitment to enable seniors to age in place with dignity.
