Elevators and Lifts Act and Regulations Come into Force

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — July 15, 2024

The Elevators and Lifts Act and corresponding regulations came into force today.

Helping to formalize authority, resolve regulatory gaps and provide a standard framework to align legislation of elevating devices in the Northwest Territories (NWT) with the rest of Canada, the Elevators and Lifts Act received assent in November 2022 but could not come into force until the Regulations were completed and ready to be adopted.

Representatives from the elevators and lifts industry met with staff from the Department of Infrastructure to discuss changes and were satisfied with the new statutory framework. NWT residents also had the opportunity to provide feedback through the Have Your Say portal; however, no relevant comments were received.

Previously, the NWT’s 230 elevators and lift systems were governed by the Electrical Protection Act. This Act provided authority to regulate electrical components of elevating devices, but not their non-electrical components.
