GNWT adjusts fuel prices in 10 NWT communities

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — June 19, 2023

Effective today, fuel prices in 10 Northwest Territories communities have been updated following the winter resupply program.

Adjustments include reductions in pricing for some fuels in some communities, particularly Gamètı̀, Jean Marie River and Tsiigehtchic, as well as increases in heating and motive fuel for Délı̨nę and Colville Lake. Similar adjustments in fuel prices are in effect for government customers in the 10 winter resupply communities.

These price adjustments are entirely the result of increased or decreased costs of petroleum products, as well as transportation costs to get these products to the communities. The GNWT is required to set retail fuel prices at amounts that recover the full laid-in cost of fuel. This includes the wholesale purchase cost and all transportation costs.

The Department of Infrastructure manages the purchase, transportation, and storage of bulk petroleum products for 16 NWT communities that are not serviced by the private sector. Ten of those 16 communities receive fuel through the GNWT’s winter resupply program:

  • Whatı̀, Gamètı̀, Wekweètı̀, Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Wrigley, Sambaa K’e, Délı̨nę, Colville Lake and Tsiigehtchic.

Fuel prices are adjusted at least twice per calendar year, after the summer barge resupply and after the winter road resupply. They are also adjusted periodically for other reasons, including changes to the carbon tax program. The next carbon tax adjustment is scheduled for April 1, 2024.
