The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) announced today that it has renamed the Legacy Stanton Building as the łıwegǫ̀atì (kle-wa-goon-tea) Building. This is the traditional Wılı̀ı̀deh yatı name for Frame Lake.
Between December 2022 and February 2023, the GNWT asked residents to submit their suggestions. The criteria included consideration for names that reflect the historical, cultural, and geographic significance of the NWT and to names that honour deceased persons who have made significant contributions to public life.
The NWT Honours Advisory Council reviewed the submissions and recommended the name to the Cabinet for confirmation.

“Thank you to all residents who took the time to submit suggestions. There was a wealth of choices. Thanks as well to the Honours Advisory Council for reviewing the submissions. Renaming the Legacy Stanton Building to the łıwegǫ̀atì Building provided us with an opportunity to advancing our commitment to reconciliation by honouring Indigenous culture and promoting the use of the NWT’s 11 official languages.”
- Julie Green, Minister of Health and Social Services
