The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is launching a new awareness campaign for National Impaired Driving Prevention Week (March 17-23) and Distracted Driving Month (April) to remind northerners of the dangers of impaired and distracted driving.
The Risks of Impaired and Distracted Driving
Driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, drugs, or even prescription and over-the-counter medications affects your judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of injury and death on Canadian roads—and it doesn’t just apply to cars. It affects snowmobiles, ATVs, motorcycles, and boats, putting everyone at risk.
Similarly, distracted driving—whether texting, adjusting navigation, or taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds—can have deadly consequences. April’s Distracted Driving Month serves as an important reminder to keep your focus where it belongs: on the road ahead.
How We Can Promote Safer Roads Together
- Plan Ahead: Use a designated driver, call a cab, or arrange alternative transportation if you’re impaired.
- Stay Focused: Put the phone down and minimize distractions while driving.
- Lead by Example: Pledge to drive sober and distraction-free and encourage others to do the same.
- Spread Awareness: Share the message in your community and on social media.
We all have a role to play in keeping NWT’s roads, trails, and waterways safe. Let’s make the right choice—for ourselves, our loved ones, and even our four-legged friends who count on us to come home at the end of the day.
