GNWT Launches New Evacuee Registration Portal

News Releases

Yellowknife — June 20, 2023

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Evacuee Registration Portal. The launch of the portal is in response to feedback from community governments about the need to streamline the process of registering evacuees prior to, and during, evacuations, as well as feedback from evacuees about having to register more than once during an evacuation.

The new portal provides residents with the ability to pre-register before an evacuation, and to request assistance from their community government during an evacuation.

The Evacuee Registration Portal, activated in the event of an evacuation, will:

  1. Improve access to evacuee services for residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT).
  2. Promote pre-registration to assist with evacuation services in the time leading up to an evacuation.
  3. Enable increased functionality when the NWT Emergency Management Organization is supporting multiple disasters at once.
  4. Improve data reporting to provide evacuation centres with advance notice of services required.

Having residents registered within the portal will allow for more efficient assistance during an evacuation. It will also assist all levels of government in providing support to community governments with their response efforts in times of need.

Quote(s)

“Community governments need to be able to respond as efficiently as possible during disaster events. It is also important to ensure that the process of providing assistance is not a burden on evacuees. This new portal supports the collaboration we have built with community governments in times of disasters and evacuations. We are always listening and learning from our partners and residents. This portal will be an important tool going forward.”

- Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

Quick Facts

  • The Evacuee Registration Portal will improve the current paper process by creating a user-friendly webform compatible with mobile phones. The webform will allow for one person to register themselves as well as all evacuees living at the same residence.
  • The portal is a client-facing system that will enable community governments to manually add residents who are unable to register by themselves.
  • The functionality of the portal will allow for the quick processing of aggregate data so that reports can be shared with community governments. These reports will show and calculate the number of evacuees and break down needs at the evacuation centre in a very efficient manner.
