The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released a What We Heard Report summarizing feedback from public engagement on the replacement of the Dehk’è Frank Channel Bridge. Additionally, in-person information sessions are scheduled on April 23 and 24 in Behchokǫ̀ to further share the findings with community members.
In February 2025, the GNWT invited local community members, Indigenous organizations, and other potentially affected parties to engage on the design and construction activities and share their interests and concerns on the project.
What we heard:
- Participants expressed general support to replace the existing Dehk’è Frank Channel Bridge, acknowledging it was constructed in 1960 and has reached its lifespan capacity.
- Participants noted safety concerns with the existing bridge, including limited visibility and weight restrictions.
- Participants noted the importance of referring to the Dehk’è Frank Channel Bridge with its full name.
- Participants shared concerns about the Project’s impact on fish and other wildlife. Protecting habitat of local species is a priority for community members.
- Participants expressed a strong desire to protect Cabin #6 (Oldman’s Cabin) in the project area, as the owner was an integral community member, and the cabin is culturally significant to the community.
- Participants expressed concern regarding access across the existing bridge during construction of the Project. The bridge is the only all-season access across the Dehk’è Frank Channel.
- Participants noted socio-economic concerns regarding construction of the bridge and camps. The main concerns include economic and employment benefits for local community members.
Residents can learn more about the project by attending an in-person information sessions on:
