Have your say on attendance and staff regulations under the Education Act

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — July 17, 2026

Provide feedback on proposed changes to the Academic Year and School Attendance Regulations and the Education Staff Regulations, under the Education Act.

The proposed amendments to the Academic Year and School Attendance Regulations would establish a clear process for making changes to school calendars after they have been made public. These changes include requirements for advance notice, public communication, and consideration of impacts on students and school staff. They would also ensure instructional time requirements are maintained, while allowing flexibility in exceptional circumstances, such as emergencies or public health events.

Proposed amendments to the Education Staff Regulations focus on strengthening teacher certification processes, improving information sharing between jurisdictions, and enhancing oversight of professional standards. The changes would also align Northwest Territories regulations with a national protocol for sharing information related to the suspension or cancellation of teaching certificates, supporting student safety and system accountability.

Your input will help ensure the proposed regulations are clear, practical, and responsive to the needs of students, educators, families, and communities.

The proposed regulations are available on the GNWT public engagement portal. You can send your feedback to educationoperations@gov.nt.ca. The engagement will be open until August 16, 2026.

All feedback received will be reviewed before the regulations are finalized, and a summary of what is heard will be shared publicly.
