Have your say: GNWT seeking public input for new building names in Fort Simpson, Inuvik and Yellowknife

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — February 27, 2019

YELLOWKNIFE (February 27, 2019)—The Government of the Northwest Territories invites all NWT residents to submit their ideas for naming Government of the Northwest Territories’ buildings in:

  • Fort Simpson (9902 – 98th Avenue);
  • Inuvik (106 Veteran’s Way); and
  • Yellowknife (5015 49th Street)

According to the Guidelines for Selecting Names for Government of the Northwest Territories Owned Office Buildings, Executive Council approval is required to name a GNWT owned office building. The Guidelines also allow for Executive Council to approve a public engagement process to solicit naming ideas from the public.

When naming a GNWT-owned office building, consideration will be given to whether the proposed name reflects the historical, cultural and geographic significance of the Northwest Territories. GNWT-owned office buildings may also be named in honour of deceased persons who have made significant contributions to public life and the well-being of territorial residents.

Interested parties can submit nominations by visiting the Department of Executive and Indigenous Affairs website.

The nomination period closes on Friday, March 15, 2019.
