The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking public feedback on proposed amendments to the Income Assistance Regulations and Income Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities Regulations under the Social Assistance Act.
The proposed amendments are intended to improve clarity and consistency in program delivery, address gaps and ensure that benefits are aligned with program objectives.
The amendments will, among other things, clarify when Emergency Assistance may be provided, create a bridge benefit for 18-year-olds and a new Basic Benefit rate for temporary medical absences, and exclude certain benefits from income calculations. A summary of the changes can be found here: https://www.ece.gov.nt.ca/sites/ece/files/resources/backgrounder_regulations_changes_to_income_assistance.pdf
The proposed changes to the regulations can be reviewed on the GNWT Public Engagement Portal. Feedback can be provided by email at IARegulations@gov.nt.ca until October 12, 2026. The regulatory amendments are expected to come into force on October 26, 2026.
