Have Your Say on Proposed Liquor Regulations

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — September 14, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking feedback from residents, businesses and communities on proposed regulations under the new Liquor Act.

The proposed regulations set out many of the rules that will govern how liquor is sold, served and regulated in the Northwest Territories. They include proposed changes related to:

  • liquor licence classes and what each licence allows;
  • permits for events and gatherings;
  • training for people who sell and serve liquor;
  • serving sizes, advertising and promotion;
  • where liquor can be bought; and
  • how communities can make local decisions about liquor.

The GNWT has prepared four short guides to help people understand the proposed changes and how they may affect the public, licensed businesses, permit holders and communities.

Residents and interested organizations can review the proposed regulations and guides and provide feedback through the GNWT’s Have Your Say engagement website.

Feedback can address any part of the proposed regulations, including what is unclear, what may be difficult to follow in practice, and what may be missing.

Visit the GNWT Engagement Portal to review the proposed regulations, read the guides and complete the survey. The deadline to provide feedback is October 16, 2026.
