Phased increases to most compliance and licensing fees are expected to come into effect starting June 15, 2026. Specific fees related to National Safety Code (NSC) commercial vehicles (commercial vehicles weighing over 4,500 kilograms) are expected to come into effect starting July 1, 2026; this includes Deh Cho Bridge tolls.
Compliance and licensing fees – including driver’s licence registrations and renewals and permits for electromechanical work – will increase by 6.7% (4.4% increase plus the territorial Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 2.3%) on June 15, 2026. Specific fees related to NSC commercial vehicles will see this increase come into effect on July 1, 2026. From 2027 to 2030, these fees will increase annually on April 1 by 4.4% plus the previous year’s CPI.
Deh Cho Bridge tolls, which apply only to NSC commercial vehicles, will increase by 2.3%, reflecting the previous year’s CPI beginning July 1, 2026.
For certain offences, an additional one-time 10% increase will be applied on top of the combined 4.4% adjustment and the previous year’s CPI increase, resulting in a total increase of 16.7%. This increase will apply to fines related to Criminal Code violations, suspensions, and associated penalties, such as fees to reinstate a licence following a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) suspension.
This new fee structure will support fiscal sustainability and improve cost recovery for regulatory and licensing services and allow the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to plan for program and service improvements.
The GNWT is aware of the potential impact this may have on consumers from companies that frequently cross Deh Cho Bridge to provide goods and services and will monitor and review this increase over the next fiscal year.
A recent release stated that all fees were set to come into effect on June 15, 2026; this date has been revised for some fees due to a system configuration adjustment.
