January Diploma Exams Cancelled for NWT Students

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — January 5, 2022

January Diploma Exams for Northwest Territories’ (NWT) students have been cancelled due to the recent change in students’ return to school dates after the holiday break and the evolving COVID-19 situation.

This decision applies to the January 2022 exams only. Decisions around the April and June diploma exams and the Alberta Achievement Tests (AATs) will be made at a later date.

Students who were scheduled to write a diploma exam in January 2022 will instead receive an exemption and their school mark will stand for 100 per cent of the overall mark.  Students who intended to write diploma exams in January will have the option to do so during the April or June sessions, as available.

Prior to the recent developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, and the NWT’s response to the Omicron variant, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) planned to administer Diploma Exams with accommodations in place. The decision to cancel the January 2022 session was made in recognition of the current state of the pandemic and to remove any undue burden for students and schools. This decision is also in line with Alberta Education’s approach.
