The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is enhancing the Early Childhood Program Operating Subsidy. As of April 1, 2023, licensed family day home operators are eligible to receive the Early Childhood Program Operating Subsidy for child care spaces filled by their own children between birth to 11 years of age.
Licensed family day home operators can provide care for up to eight children under 11 years of age in their home, including their own children. The GNWT provides licensed early learning and child care programs with an attendance-based, daily operating subsidy for each child attending a program.
This means that a licensed family day home operator living in Fort Smith with an infant of their own and their other seven child care spaces filled previously received up to $38,513/year in operational funding from the GNWT. With this change, they will now receive up to $47,522/year.
Licensed family day home operators can contact their regional Early Childhood Consultant to learn more about this change and what it may mean for them.
Those interested in starting a licensed family day home can learn more by visiting www.ece.gov.nt.ca/start-a-licensed-family-day-home or contacting the Early Childhood Consultant in their region.
