MACA Launches the 2022 Hazard Identification Risk Assessment survey

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — February 24, 2022

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) has launched a survey to gather input on the 2022 Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA). The Northwest Territories (NWT) HIRA provides an examination of the risks that pose the greatest threat to the people, property, environment, and economy of the NWT.

The assessment is a critical part of the Government of the NWT’s (GNWT) emergency management program. Identified hazards are considered in developing territorial preparedness programs, mitigation strategies, emergency response plans, exercises, and training and awareness programs.

Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. It is important for NWT residents and governments to understand the hazards and associated risk facing communities and residents so they can better prepare and respond to emergencies when they happen.

MACA is conducting an update of the 2014 HIRA to ensure identified hazards throughout the NWT reflect the current environment, which will serve to improve emergency preparedness and response procedures and plans.

The public is invited to share their views by completing a public engagement survey https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/engagements/updating-hazard-identification-risk-assessment

Your input is important to improving emergency preparedness and response in the NWT. We all have a role to play in keeping communities and residents safe.
