Media Statement

Yellowknife — February 26, 2025

Today, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Caitlin Cleveland issued the following statement for Pink Shirt Day:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe and accepted for who they are. Today, as we celebrate Pink Shirt Day, pink shirts can be found in workplaces, schools, homes and even online. By wearing pink, we promote safe environments, free from bullying and harassment, for everyone. It is a call to take a stand, and to speak up for equality and acceptance for everyone, especially our most vulnerable and marginalized residents.

“Bullying can take many shapes, whether it is based on age, race, religion, gender, sexuality or physical differences. “Recognizing that all children can learn in a welcoming and safe environment is the foundation of inclusive schooling, an essential part of our education system for decades. Each student’s best interest is centered in an inclusive education system.

“If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. You can:

“I hope that as children, youth, families and communities see this outpouring of public support on Pink Shirt Day, they know that they are valued for who they are. I encourage everyone to take time today to talk about empathy, compassion and kindness; and to reflect on how we treat one another. Let’s celebrate what makes each of us unique and stand together against bullying.”
