New GNWT ‘Active Offer’ video shows how to access GNWT French language services

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — March 29, 2022

The Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) has released a new instructional video to help the public understand how to access French language services and how to use the active offer.  An active offer is a greeting that informs the public that they may communicate in either French or English when requesting a service from the GNWT. Its purpose is to ensure that an individual feels comfortable expressing themselves in either language.

The short video outlines the methods of accessing French language services through:

  • having bilingual personnel at points of direct service to the public;
  • using referral systems to facilitate easy access to bilingual personnel or an interpretation service upon first contact between a French-speaking client and a non-French-speaking employee;
  • using the appropriate bilingual publication format for public information and usage materials; and,
  • presenting materials in both languages in display areas and on websites.

The Active Offer video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPg5TIzDxlk.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to offering its communications, programs, and services in French in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Fort Smith and Hay River through appropriate and practical methods that are adapted to the particular context and needs of the Francophone community.
