The Government of the Northwest Territories is now offering funding to organizations to help families get out on the land. The program is designed to offset the costs of participating in outdoor learning experiences like camping, boating, fishing and hunting, and traditional activities, so more northerners can get involved.
Any NWT Indigenous government, Indigenous organization, community government or not-for-profit association can apply for funding to support their community. Individuals cannot apply for this program directly. Successful applicants will receive up to $10,000 to help families who may not have the resources to support on the land activities.
A family, for this program, is defined as any two or more people who play an important role in each other’s lives. They do not have to be related and all family combinations, including 2SLGBTQIPA+ families, single-parent families, and multigenerational families, are considered eligible.
Applications are open from December 1, 2021 to January 10, 2022.
Quote(s)
“Getting on the land is one of the best parts of living in this territory. The knowledge and experiences you can gain by spending time outdoors and learning from others is priceless. We want to make sure all northerners have the opportunity to learn as families—whatever family means to you.”
- Shane Thompson, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources
