You can now take a short online training to help recognize and respond to Elder abuse.
Recognize and Respond to Elder Abuse is a self‑directed training now available to GNWT staff and to organizations that serve seniors and Elders, including Non‑Governmental Organizations and community partners. The training provides practical guidance to help participants identify warning signs, understand common risk factors, and respond in safe, trauma‑aware, and person‑centred ways.
Elder abuse is often difficult to identify and frequently occurs within close personal relationships. It can have serious impacts on the safety, health, and well‑being of seniors, Elders, and the communities in which they live. Early recognition and informed responses are an important part of crime prevention and community safety.
This training supports the GNWT Public Safety mandate by focusing on prevention, early intervention, and coordinated responses. It delivers on a GNWT Business Plan action to develop and implement Elder abuse training and awareness initiatives for service providers and organizations serving seniors.
This is part of broader efforts to improve access to GNWT-led training for non-governmental organizations and to support stronger, more informed service delivery in communities across the territory.
The training takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes a narrated video, an optional knowledge quiz, and practical tools that can be adapted for use in different settings. Participants are also connected to regional support and response resources available in the Northwest Territories.
Strengthening prevention, improving early intervention, and supporting the people and organizations who work with seniors contributes to healthier people and communities across the Northwest Territories.
