The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation (NWTHC) has announced a new mandate, composed of a statement of mission, values, and vision. A key deliverable under A Strategy for Renewal of the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation, the mandate reflects the NWTHC’s role in social wellness, and sets the stage for further steps in the renewal.

The mandate’s new mission acknowledges that the NWTHC is part of an integrated wellness support system, composed of other government departments and partners, while also recognizing that supports must focus on those who need them most.

As the next step in the renewal process is a review of the NWTHC’s programs and policies, this new mandate will provide an important lens through which this review will be undertaken.

The NWTHC began to develop the new mandate in the fall of 2021, drawing on the renewal strategy and a variety of sources including a March Motion of the Legislative Assembly, engagements with NWTHC staff and the Council of Leaders Housing Working Group, and various reports and opinion papers.

• The 19th Legislative Assembly has identified that one of its priorities is to increase the number of affordable homes and reduce NWT core housing need.
• The NWTHC provides social and market housing programs and services like subsidized rental and homeownership programs (including purchase and repairs), and unsubsidized rental housing in rural and remote communities.
• Residents who are most in need will be the focus of NWTHC resources and highest priority.
