Premier Cochrane and Minister Thompson Offer the GNWT’s Full Support in the Wake of Evacuation Orders

Media Statement

Yellowknife — May 15, 2023

Premier Caroline Cochrane and Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs and Environment and Climate Change Shane Thompson issued the following statement today regarding the evacuations of Hay River and the Kátł’odeeche First Nation due to an ongoing wildfire in the area:

“This weekend, an aggressive wildfire forced residents of Hay River and the Kátł’odeeche First Nation to evacuate their homes. The situation is evolving rapidly, and it is critical that residents not return to their communities at this time.

"The Government of the Northwest Territories’ Emergency Management Organization has been activated and is providing support to communities and leadership on the ground. Crews are actively working in the area to fight the wildfire.

“We urge residents of these communities to respect orders as they are issued. Please move to a safer location – either in Yellowknife or in another community. The Yellowknife Multiplex is prepared to host evacuees and provide necessary supports to those who need them.

“There is a lot of information being shared, but not all of it is accurate or timely. For the latest, most accurate information, visit the Facebook pages for Hay River and Kátł’odeeche, or the GNWT’s Public Safety page. We ask that residents continue to adhere to orders as they are issued, and regularly look for updates for their community. The safety of our residents and our communities is our top priority.

“Hay River and Kátł’odeeche First Nation residents have our government’s full support. We will assist you by providing immediate supports and services, and remain by your side in the days and weeks to come.”
