Premier R.J. Simpson congratulates newly elected Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief

Media Statement

Yellowknife — October 1, 2025

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today on the election of the Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief:

“On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I extend my sincere congratulations to Jackson Lafferty on his reelection as Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief.

This seventh Grand Chief election marks not only a renewal of leadership, but a reaffirmation of the Tłı̨chǫ people’s strength, resilience, and commitment to self-determination. Twenty years after the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement came into force, the Government continues to stand as a model of Indigenous governance in Canada and beyond.

I commend both candidates for their dedication and for their years of service to Tłı̨chǫ citizens and Tłı̨chǫ unity. I also want to acknowledge the citizens who participated in this important democratic process. Their engagement reflects the vitality of Tłı̨chǫ democracy and the enduring vision of the Elders and leaders who laid the foundation for self-government.

I look forward to continuing to work closely with Grand Chief Lafferty and the Tłı̨chǫ Chiefs Executive Council in the months and years ahead. Together, through the Northwest Territories Council of Leaders and our daily collaboration, we will continue to strengthen our partnerships and build stronger, healthier communities across the North.

As the Council of Leaders prepares to travel to Ottawa next week, I am reminded that when Indigenous governments and public governments act in true partnership, we can achieve lasting results for the people we serve.

Congratulations again to Grand Chief Lafferty, and to all Tłı̨chǫ citizens on this proud milestone in the continuing story of self-government.”
