Yellowknife — September 17, 2024

Premier Simpson issued the following statement today on the passing of Tony Whitford:

Yesterday, the whole of the Northwest Territories lost a staunch supporter, a dedicated servant of the people and a friend, Mr. Anthony (Tony) Whitford.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew and respected him.

Mr. Whitford served the NWT in many capacities and has the unique distinction of being the only person to have served in the Northwest Territories (NWT) Legislative Assembly as an elected Member, as a Cabinet Minister, as Speaker, and as Sergeant-of-Arms. Mr. Whitford also served as both Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of the NWT. Mr. Whitford received the Order of the NWT in 2016 for his years of dedicated service.

Beyond the conclusion of his historic career of service, Mr. Whitford maintained a keen interest in the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly and was a frequent presence in the Visitor’s Gallery. He was known to all Members of the Legislative Assembly for his positive spirit and humanity.

Mr. Whitford brought those same qualities to his volunteer work as a member of Rotary International for more than 30 years and worked tirelessly to support Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories.

He will be missed by all who knew him.
