Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today on Trans Day of Visibility:
“Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, we recognize and celebrate trans and gender-diverse people across the Northwest Territories.
“This day is about visibility, but it is also about respect. Everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported for who they are, in their communities, in their workplaces, and in their daily lives.
“We know that for many trans and gender-diverse Northerners, that has not always been the experience. There is more work to do to ensure that our systems, services, and communities are inclusive and welcoming.
“There are steps being taken to support that work. This includes ensuring access to gender-affirming health care, with clear referral pathways and support for residents who need to travel to receive care. We are also working to ensure our schools are safe and inclusive environments, supported by guidance and resources that help students feel respected and supported for who they are.
“We are also continuing to update our laws to better reflect the diversity of Northerners. Proposed changes to the Vital Statistics Act will help ensure that government records and services are more inclusive of gender identity and modern family realities.
“This work is ongoing. We will continue to work with partners and community organizations to strengthen supports and reduce barriers.
“To trans and gender-diverse people across the Northwest Territories: you are valued, and you belong here.”
