Premier R.J. Simpson offers condolences on the passing of Bob Simpson

Media Statement

Premier R.J. Simpson wishes to offer his deepest condolences on the passing of Bob Simpson, whose decades of service helped shape the political and social landscape of the Northwest Territories.

“Bob Simpson was a dedicated and thoughtful leader who devoted his life to advancing Indigenous rights and strengthening Northern governance. Over more than 25 years with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, and in leadership roles across the Beaufort Delta, he made lasting contributions to self-government, devolution, education, and community development.

From his early role as Chief Negotiator for the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement to his recent work as Director of Government Affairs with IRC, Bob brought integrity, skill, and a deep commitment to collaboration. He was instrumental in shaping key frameworks and policies that continue to benefit communities today.

In 2017, Bob was recognized with the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration—an honour that reflected his tireless contributions to the public good and the territory as a whole.

I extend my sincere condolences to Bob’s family, friends, and colleagues, including the staff and leadership of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation who worked closely with him. His legacy of service and advocacy will be felt across the North for years to come.”
