Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today on Premier Pillai’s announcement that he will step away from territorial politics:

"I want to extend my sincere thanks to Premier Pillai for his leadership, friendship, and partnership, and to wish him and his family all the best as he prepares to step away from territorial politics.

I’ve truly valued the opportunity to work closely with Premier Pillai over the past year and a half. As territorial Premiers, we have faced shared challenges and opportunities — and throughout it all, he has been a strong, thoughtful, and determined advocate for Yukon and for the North as a whole.

During my visit to Whitehorse and Haines Junction this past weekend, I was reminded again of how deeply he cares about Yukoners and the issues that affect their daily lives. That commitment has been central to his work, and it has made him a trusted and respected voice across the North and on the national stage.

Alongside Premier Akeeagok, Premier Pillai has played a key role in ensuring that Northern perspectives are heard and understood, especially at a time when the North’s place in Canada’s future has never been more important. His efforts have strengthened relationships between our governments and with the Government of Canada, advanced important discussions, and helped shape a stronger, more united North.

I want to thank Premier Pillai again for his dedication and partnership, and wish him well as he looks ahead to what comes next."
