Premier R.J. Simpson on staying united amid new U.S. tariffs and strengthening Canada’s economic resilience

Media Statement

Hay River — August 22, 2026

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to the United States imposing new tariffs on Canadian goods following recent Canada-U.S. trade negotiations:

“After weeks of negotiations and real progress toward an agreement, it is deeply disappointing that the United States has chosen to move ahead with new tariffs. These measures will hurt workers, families and businesses on both sides of the border.

Canada came to the table in good faith, and the Prime Minister was right to hold the line for a fair agreement rather than accept a deal at any cost. The Northwest Territories stands with the Prime Minister and with Team Canada. We support a strong, coordinated response to defend Canadian interests and support the workers, businesses and industries most affected.

Canada is also building more economic strength here at home. We are breaking down barriers within our own country, diversifying our trade, developing Canadian resources and advancing nation-building infrastructure that will connect our country, strengthen our sovereignty and open new markets.

The North is a big part of that work. We are advancing projects like the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor and the Taltson Hydro Expansion, while advancing critical mineral development and other resources Canada and our allies need.

The projects we are advancing in the North will create jobs, strengthen Canadian supply chains, open new markets and make Canada more self-reliant. They are an important part of the nation-building work ahead.

The North is ready to build. We will keep working with Canada, Indigenous governments and other partners to grow our economy, create opportunities for Northerners, strengthen our sovereignty and help build a stronger Canada.”
