Premier Simpson congratulates Northwest Territories Commissioner Gerry Kisoun

Media Statement

Premier Simpson issued the following statement on yesterday’s swearing-in of Northwest Territories Commissioner Gerry Kisoun in Inuvik:

I am pleased to extend my congratulations to Gerry Kisoun on being named Commissioner of the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Born on the trapline in 1953, Commissioner Kisoun brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He served as Deputy Commissioner from 2011 to 2017 and briefly as acting Commissioner upon the retirement of former Commissioner George Tuccaro.

As the Northwest Territories continues its journey towards self-determination and reconciliation, I believe that Commissioner Kisoun will proudly represent the interests of the North.

The role of Commissioner, with its unique demands, requires someone who is not only familiar with but deeply connected to the people across the Northwest Territories. As a respected Elder of Inuvialuit and Gwich’in heritage, he has spent his life hearing and sharing stories about the land, people, and culture of the Mackenzie Delta.

Commissioner Kisoun is known for his compassion, tolerance, and a profound commitment to the welfare of the people across our territory. His leadership and deep-rooted understanding of the NWT’s cultural heritage will undoubtedly guide us as we strive towards a collective and prosperous future for all residents of the NWT.
