Premier Simpson reaffirms support for NWT mining industry and commitment to economy in face of call for red alert

Media Statement

Yellowknife — October 20, 2025

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to recent discussion about the state of the Northwest Territories’ mining industry:

“Mining has been central to the Northwest Territories’ economy for generations, and our government shares the concern about the challenges the industry is facing.

At a time when there is concern about the future of the industry, what is needed most is steady leadership and action. Our focus is on supporting the people and communities that rely on this industry, and on creating the conditions for new projects to move forward.

This has been a major focus for our government since day one. Strengthening the mining and exploration sector has been a cornerstone of our federal engagement and advocacy, and it is encouraging to see more people recognizing how important this work is.

The sector is facing real challenges, from global market shifts and rising costs to the natural decline of aging mines. We recognize the uncertainty this creates for workers, businesses, and communities across the territory, and we are focused on practical steps that support stability now and growth over the long term.

We are working closely with partners to make the regulatory system more efficient and predictable, support early-stage exploration through the Mining Incentive Program, finalize the Mineral Resources Act regulations to provide greater clarity and modern tools such as online map staking, and continue to advocate for a proposed North of 60 Mineral Exploration Tax Credit so the North can compete on a level playing field with the provinces. We have also engaged with the federal government on options for tariff relief and measures to support the diamond sector to help protect Northern jobs, sustain Indigenous businesses, and strengthen communities during this transition.

At the same time, we are advancing nation-building infrastructure projects like the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Taltson Hydro Expansion, and the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor. These investments will lower costs, unlock resources, power new mines, and strengthen Canada’s sovereignty and supply chains while creating lasting opportunities in partnership with Indigenous governments.

Prime Minister Carney and the new federal government have signaled a genuine interest in advancing critical minerals and investing in the North in ways that demonstrate Canada’s commitment to sovereignty, security, and economic growth. We welcome that focus and will continue to be strong partners in making it a reality.

The mining industry remains the foundation of our private sector and a driver of good jobs, strong businesses, and resilient communities. It has given the territory a great deal — good careers, thriving local companies, and capacity that continues to benefit Northern communities.

Our government believes in this sector and in the people who make it work. We will continue working with Indigenous governments, industry, and the federal government to bring new projects online, protect Northern jobs, and create new opportunities for Northerners.”
