Rates increased for 2024-2025 Senior Home Heating Subsidy

News Releases

Yellowknife — August 1, 2024

The Government of the Northwest Territories will be increasing 2024-2025 Senior Home Heating Subsidy rates in recognition of the cost of living. The increases will provide an extra $85 to $175 per month from September 2024 to April 2025, depending on the senior’s community.

Seniors who have already been approved for 2024-2025 do not need to re-apply for the increased subsidy. Seniors who have not yet applied for the Senior Home Heating Subsidy are encouraged to do so now.

The Senior Home Heating Subsidy provides financial assistance to low-to-modest income seniors to assist with the cost of heating their homes, though they are responsible for covering the remainder of their heating costs.

Quote

“The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to supporting seniors and enabling them to live healthy and independent lives. With the rising cost of living, we recognize that inflation is putting economic pressure on households, including those of senior residents. The increase to the Senior Home Heating Subsidy rates for the 2024-2025 season will better support seniors in heating their homes this winter.”
