Safe driving on our highways and winter roads

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — December 17, 2025

Driving on winter and ice roads in the Northwest Territories comes with unique challenges. These roads support community resupply and see increased commercial and residential traffic throughout the winter, especially from December to March and particularly on the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road.

The GNWT and the Department of Infrastructure continues to enhance winter road safety through widening sections where possible and maintaining regular inspections and maintenance.

Whether you are a resident or a commercial driver, please keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Check road and weather conditions: www.DriveNWT.ca
  • Share your travel plans with someone, including route and arrival time.
  • Pack a winter survival kit with essentials: extra fuel, spare tire, warm clothes, blankets, water and food.
  • Follow speed limits, adjusting for snow, ice, and visibility.
  • Keep a safe distance (at least four seconds) from other vehicles, giving extra room to large trucks.
  • Always yield to oncoming traffic and give space to large trucks.
  • Pass only when it's safe and use headlights for visibility.
  • Avoid distractions and never drive impaired.

If you are travelling on the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road, it is recommended to carry a LADD 1 radio and call out your direction at major hills and bridge crossings.

Commercial drivers should also:

  • Confirm all weight restrictions and permitted hours of operation before travelling.
  • Use the LADD 1 radio channel and announce direction at bridges and major hills on the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road.

In Case of Emergency:

  • Call 9-1-1 for police or medical assistance Please be aware that cell coverage may be limited or unavailable in some areas, which may increase response times.
  • Stay with your vehicle for shelter and visibility to rescuers.
  • Run your engine sparingly and keep the exhaust pipe clear.
  • Move around periodically to stay warm if stranded overnight.
