Snowmobile Safety

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — February 3, 2025

Winter in the Northwest Territories offers incredible opportunities for adventure. Snowmobiling is one of the best ways to get out on the land and enjoy the season. But before you hit the trails, make sure safety is part of your ride.

Here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Always wear a helmet and dress for the cold to stay warm and protected.
  • Slow down – rollovers and collisions often happen when riders go too fast.
  • Inspect your snowmobile before heading out and pack an emergency kit with essentials like a first aid kit and extra fuel.
  • Tell someone your route and when you plan to return.
  • Stay sober – riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol puts everyone at risk.

Remember: If you’re building a recreational ice road this winter, make sure to mark your berms for the safety of all riders. You can get a free woodcutting permit from your local Environment and Climate Change office to harvest small trees, place markers at 30m intervals along the roadside, and remember to remove them before spring breakup. Small actions can make a big difference in keeping others safe on out on the land.

Let’s make this winter safe and enjoyable for everyone. Ride smart, ride safe.
