Winter in the Northwest Territories offers incredible opportunities to get out on the land. Snowmobiling is one of the best ways to get out and enjoy the season. But before you hit the trails, make sure safety is part of your ride.
Here are some quick tips to keep in mind:
- Wear a helmet and dress for the conditions to stay warm, visible, and protected.
- Slow down. Rollovers and collisions are more likely at high speeds, especially on unfamiliar terrain.
- Check your snowmobile before you go and pack an emergency kit with essentials like a first aid kit, tools, and extra fuel.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to return.
- Ride sober. Alcohol or drugs impair judgment and reaction time and put everyone at risk.
If you’re building a recreational ice road this winter, take steps to protect others. Mark your berms clearly so they’re visible to riders, especially at night or in poor visibility. You can get a free woodcutting permit from your local Environment and Climate Change office to harvest small trees for markers. Place markers at 30-metre intervals along the roadside and remember to remove them before spring breakup.
Small actions make a big difference in keeping everyone safe on the land.
Let’s make this winter safe and enjoyable for all. Ride smart, ride safe.
